¡@ ¡@¡@Dr.I.E. Newson, the former Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine Colorado State University, the United States, played a prominent role to set up the National Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital. In 1952, Dr. Newson was invited by the Council of Agriculture as a consultant to evaluate education and development of veterinary medicine and animal husbandry in Taiwan. During his stay, he suggested that a veterinary hospital should be established affiliated to the National Taiwan University, to improve quality of both veterinary education and research.

¡@ ¡@¡@The NTUVH was therefore founded on the National Taiwan University with finacial support from the Council of Agriculture. Completed in May 16th 1955, the building located on Chou-San Road, was officially opened to provide veterinary services and clinical instruction for veterinary medical students. The hospital was the first veterinary teaching hospital in Taiwan.

¡@ ¡@¡@In the early stage, veterinary services provided by the NTUVH included care for pets and farm animals, as well as poultry and fish health. Field investigation was also available on farms and ranches. Apart from routine veterinary services, the NTUVH was responsible for animal quarantine that was appointed by the Bureau of Commodity Inspection and Quarantine, Ministry of Economic Affairs. Such service was discontinued 30 years after, due to limited personnel and increasing demands for routine veterinary services to the public.

¡@ ¡@¡@The clinical services of the NTUVH are completed by both staff clinicians and clinicians derived from the faculty of the academic department. Senior veterinary medical students are supervised under teams of clinicians and faculty members to ensure they receive proper clinical instruction. In addition, the NTUVH has an international reputation to attract overseas students.

¡@¡@Forty years after the NTUVH was first established, room for expansion was urgent to cope with over-crowded students and newly equipped facilities. Former directors of the NTUVH, Professors A-C Lin and K-Y Chen were very carefully laying plans for expansion, and keen to seek and acquire a suitable site and raise money for a new building. A new building was then successfully founded on the National Taiwan University and the Ministry of Education. A six-story building with basement started to construct. Five years later, at the end of 1995, the new building was completed. In November 15th 1995, the NTUVH moved to the premises and was officially opened. To enhance further functions, and improve teaching quality and clinical services, the organization of the NTUVH was also modulated at the same time. It substantially became a full-functioning veterinary hospital and one of the most advanced veterinary hospitals in southern-east Asia.
