History of the National Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital

Dr. I.E. Newson, former Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Colorado State University, United States, was the key person on founding the National Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital (NTUVH). In 1952, he was invited by the Council of Agriculture, as an advisor on the education program and the developmental status of the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry profession in Taiwan. He recommended that a veterinary hospital should be established and affiliated to the veterinary school of National Taiwan University (NTU) to improve the quality of veterinary education and research. Thus, with the financial support from the Council of Agriculture, the first veterinary teaching hospital in Taiwan was instituted on May 16, 1955 on Chou-San Road in the NTU campus. It provided veterinary medical service for the public and clinic training for senior veterinary students of NTU.

Forty years later, the original NTUVH building became over-crowded from growing demand on in-house service, increasing student number, and newly equipped facilities. With the financial support from the Ministry of Education, a new veterinary hospital was then built on Keelung Road right next to the NTU main campus. The new NTUVH was a six-story building with basement and officially began providing services on Nov. 15, 1995. It became one of the most advanced veterinary hospitals in Southeast Asia. With the support from the Council of Agriculture, 3 more stories of lab animal facilities and teaching/research spaces were added during 2002-2004 which turned the NTUVH the current 9-story.
